We spent a lot of time in Dorset as children, so we know a thing or two when it comes to rainy day and family friendly activities. We have put together a definitive list of things to do in Dorset that we recommend for our guests staying in Bournemouth and Sandbanks.
GET THE CHAIN FERRY TO STUDLAND AND HOP ON THE STEAM TRAIN TO CORFE
The Lookout, our Sandbanks apartment is directly opposite the chain ferry that takes you to Studland. Accessible for those in a car and on foot, take the chain ferry and either drive or hop on the bus to Swanage where you can get the steam train to Corfe! Swanage is a fantastic little seaside town where an ice cream and play in the arcades makes the perfect childhood memories.
BROWNSEA ISLAND FERRY
You can also take a boat from Sandbanks to Brownsea Island for the day - the ferry is accessible via a yellow hut which you can see from the window of The Lookout apartment!
Call us old fashioned, but the beach is always fun. There’s nothing quite like Sandbanks beach which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There's a little play park not far from the apartment and crazy golf for children (and adults) of all ages on Sandbanks beach.
For young children
We all love going on holiday with the kids, and keeping them entertained as well as having a good day out yourself is always essential. Farmer Palmers is a truly fantastic day out for the whole family and is not far from The Lookout. It’s a family play farm with lots of animals, and other activities. There's loads to do there for all ages and has a good café for lunch.
THE TANK MUSEUM
Fantastic on a rainy day, The Tank Museum has a unique collection of over 300 vehicles is regarded as the best in the world and includes the world's first ever tank - Little Willie, the feared German Tiger tank and the modern Challenger 2. Thier exhibitions tell the story of armoured warfare from World War One to the present day. As you explore the Museum's six large halls you will come face to face with vehicles that have seen action in all the major wars of the 20th Century and hear first-hand accounts from those who fought in them.
Kingston Lacey is an old country house and estate with big gardens and plenty to do for the whole family.
If your kids like playgrounds then Monkey World is a must visit. They assist governments around the world to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild. At the Centre you’ll find plenty of friendly refugees of this illegal trade as well as those that have suffered abuse or neglect which are rehabilitated into natural living groups. They have the most epic playground you'll ever see!
PEPPA PIG WORLD
Paulton’s Park is on your way to/from Bournemouth, it's about a 50 minute drive from our holiday apartment but lots of the families who come to stay with us do this either on the way or way back from their stay - or for longer stays of a week, families tend to make the trip! Inside Paulton’s Park you’ll find Peppa Pig World which is a hit attraction in our area!
‘All Fired Up' is a pottery café in Bournemouth town centre, and is a great rainy day activity. We would recommend for those who are staying with us for longer as you’ll want to make sure you have time to get your masterpieces picked up!
OCEANARIUM - BOURNEMOUTH AQUARIUM
Bournemouth Oceanarium is right on the seafront and is good for families of all ages. With over 150 different species of fish, reptiles and mammals - yes they have penguins! - there’s fun to be had by everyone. You can even watch the otters, penguins, sharks and turtles grab a bite to eat at their feeding times!
MOORS VALLEY COUNTRY PARK
If you want something a bit more natural than touristy then Moors Valley Country Park is brilliant, it's in the new forest and there's lots of outdoor activities to do there including a little steam railway. Plus you might see some of our famous New Forest Ponies on your journey!
If you’re planning a visit to Dorset, Bournemouth or Sandbanks, don’t forget to have a look at our family friendly luxury holiday apartment. We would be delighted to have you join us! We get very booked up during the summer months so make sure you book now to avoid disappointment!
